- Flexible appointment structures for faculty: Delegated members Lynda Cabrales, Jennifer Chung, and Lakeisha Johnson presented the committee with a draft proposal about part-time tenure-track faculty appointments on the UIUC campus. The proposal outlines the need for part-time tenure-track appointments. It also examines institutions that have implemented such policy changes, and ultimately will provide recommendations. The committee discussed the need to explore and address the pros and cons of part-time tenure-track faculty in order to make adequate recommendations. Committee Chair Kathryn Anthony and delegated member Kathleen Pecknold will contact and interview key staff at institutions that have implemented part-time tenure-track faculty appointment to explore these pros and cons. Member Linda Beale suggested the possibility of conducting a faculty focus group or e-mail survey directed toward faculty and PhD students, to obtain concerns about a part-time tenure-track policy. The survey would include proposed models and ask participants to comment on both advantages and disadvantages of each. The committee will explore the possibility of conducting such an e-mail survey in accordance with the Senate Equal Opportunity Committee. The committee is still seeking a copy or summary of the NSF grant proposal discussed by previous guest Susan Larson.
- Analyzed deficiencies and improve women's restrooms: Delegated member Deanie Brown presented the committee with a comprehensive report summarizing the status of restrooms across campus. The report provided detail findings of restroom conditions. It also confirmed that in the previous report, breast-feeding stations were defined as couches or placed to sit, but noted that those lack privacy. In addition, family rooms are unisex restrooms that can function for families (i.e., Parent-child, adult-elder), but are not specifically designed for them. The committee suggested that one of the next steps is to identify buildings on campus that are more likely to be used by children (i.e. Large auditoriums) and where improvements will need to be made, either in the remodeling of existing facilities or the building of new facilities in the future.
